One of our “Standard” Events…
Summary
A “ladder” style event played for a predefined time, lasting two to three hours. In each round, winning players move “up” the ladder and losers move “down” the ladder. This type of event works best for groups of six or more, using time controls of G5,d0 or G10,d0. In a group with a variety of skill levels, use the time handicap system. All matches happen simultaneously.

Initial Setup
- Setup boards and clocks for the number of people available, plus one extra (for latecomers). If space is available, place the boards in a line.
- Designate which board is the “top” of the ladder. It is the #1 board. The next board is #2 and so on.
- People are seated as they arrive for the event;
- #1 Board – plays as White
- #1 Board – plays as Black
- #2 Board – plays as White
- #2 Board – plays as Black
- (continue with this scheme as needed… if you have more than twelve players, consider running two separate ladders)
- The Event Director is always last, either playing as Black on the last board when you have an even number of players, or sitting out the 1st round if you have an odd number of players.
- Based on the number of players available and their feedback, determine the time control you want to use.
Play Sequence
- Play the first round. When it is over, players rotate as described in the text and diagram below:
- For the “middle” boards:
- Winners move up one board and play the next game as White.
- Losers move down one board and play the next game as Black.
- For Board #1 (the “top” board)
- The winner stays put and plays the next game as Black.
- For Board #x (the “bottom” board)
- With an even number of players, the Loser stays put and play the next game as White.
- With an odd number of players, the person sitting out comes in and plays as White; the Loser sits out the next round.
- For the “middle” boards:

- Play all subsequent rounds using the same movement scheme shown above. Take a 5 minute break every three or four rounds. Continue play until you reach the preset finish time.
